Project Info Continued ….
These facilities replaced existing buildings that were outdated, in the flood plain, and inadequately sized to meet the current and future programmatic needs of the ESL. The project design and use of similar building materials visually and architecturally tied the new facilities to Seaside Hall and the Seawater Laboratory. The new complex was raised out of the flood plain and connected by a series of decks, raised walkways, and ramps, to present the public face of the ESL.
Building construction consisted of a stick built frame, plank siding, aluminum and fiberglass windows/doors, drywall, ceiling tile, and vinyl tile floors. Elevated exterior walking surfaces were composite and the roof sloped with metal standing seam. HVAC installed was marine grade and energy efficient. Site utilities required installation of a combined septic system with leach field. Well water was increased to accommodate additional square footage. Alternate water sources were provided to accommodate life safety sprinkler systems. The project also provided temporary facilities to allow the ESL to function during construction.
Administration Building – 3,524 SF – Office space for the Director of the Lab, Business Manager, and other full time staff supporting the lab.
Maintenance Shop – 5,008 SF – Two small offices, a restroom with the remaining area dedicated to maintenance. The Maintenance shop needed the capability to perform minor service truck repair to boat and boat motor repair, lawn mower repair and small equipment repair. There is also a designated area for a welding station that required a small hood with a switch operated exhaust.
Storage Shop 1 and 2 – 648 SF and 768 SF, – Storage building provided for general materials that support the campus.
Visiting Scientist/Student Building – 6,031 SF – This facility replaced Owens Hall and provide VIMS ESL with a facility for visitors/researchers/students coming to the Eastern Shore Laboratory to participate in field courses or research that last for varying lengths of time (could be 3 days to 3 weeks).
The Aquaculture Hatchery – 2,116 SF replaced an outdated shellfish hatchery. HVAC system designed was marine grade and energy efficient. A pump house was built adjacent to the facility to serve labs required to process seawater.
