The City of Hampton engaged Vansant & Gusler, Inc. to provide mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services for the new Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center, a 13,000-square-foot multi-use facility constructed on the site of a previous building. Designed to serve a wide range of community needs, the center accommodates programs for seniors and youth, educational and technology initiatives, wellness activities, and cultural events, and includes a gymnasium, classrooms, activity spaces, and a fitness center.
Vansant & Gusler supported the project through design and construction administration, providing coordinated MEP systems tailored to the building’s varied uses. Mechanical design included a rooftop single-zone variable air volume unit serving the gymnasium and split-system heat pumps
serving the remaining spaces. Electrical and site improvements included a new underground electrical service, LED interior lighting, and exterior site lighting, along with a wet-pipe sprinkler system throughout the facility.
The project required careful consideration of the surrounding neighborhood, with design decisions supporting connectivity, safety, and the continued character of the community. The resulting facility provides a flexible, energy-efficient space that reinforces neighborhood identity while supporting a broad range of public programs and activities.
