Varian Edge Synergy
Project included plumbing, fire protection, HVAC, lighting, power, telephone and data for the replacement of an existing Varian Clinac® High-Energy Radiotherapy Accelerator (Synergy) with a new Varian Edge system and its relocation within the facility, while maintaining uninterrupted patient services throughout the transition.

The project included development of a new treatment area consisting of two primary spaces: the Treatment Room, or Vault, housing the radiotherapy equipment, and the associated Control Room, or Console Area. Work within the existing vault was limited to safe shutdown and removal of power to the original system, along with cut-and-cap of existing chilled water and backup water services.
The new vault scope included complete replacement of plumbing, fire protection, HVAC, lighting, power distribution, fire alarm, and data and communication systems. A dedicated remote equipment room was added to mitigate acoustical noise generated by the radiotherapy system. All required field investigations, engineering calculations, and equipment selections were performed to support the new installation.
Mechanical and plumbing design services included provision of cooling water systems necessary for Edge operation and compressed air connections to support preventative maintenance.
Electrical design services addressed the specialized requirements of the Edge system, including
three-phase power, safety interlocks, emergency stop systems, warning indicators, and controlled power distribution to support high-voltage equipment operation.
The Edge base-frame assembly was installed within a recessed concrete pit below finished floor elevation and grouted in place to support the treatment unit and Exact Couch system. Electrical and utility connections were coordinated at the base-frame to support cooling, compressed air, and equipment servicing requirements.
Electrical infrastructure included dedicated conduit pathways between the treatment room, control room, and modulator cabinet locations to support power, controls, and safety systems. Additional low-voltage systems were designed to support patient and staff communication, including CCTV monitoring, intercom systems, wireless input devices, and radiation-hardened camera equipment. The control area was provided with appropriate power, data, and communication connections to support console operations, patient monitoring, and system integration.
The completed design supported precise installation, safe operation, and reliable long-term performance of the Varian Edge radiotherapy system while maintaining operational continuity within an active medical facility.
