Our design team provided MP&E engineering services for renovation of a patient care wing at Riverside Hospital, part of Riverside Regional Medical Center. The scope included replacing building systems serving patient rooms, nursing areas, and support spaces while maintaining healthcare ventilation, safety, and life-safety compliance.

Mechanical system upgrades included demolition of existing induction units, ductwork, piping, and controls, followed by installation of a new variable air volume (VAV) HVAC system. The new system was served by a rooftop air-handling unit utilizing chilled water for cooling and hot water for heating. Individual VAV terminal units with hot-water reheat coils were provided to serve patient rooms, nursing stations, and support areas, allowing precise temperature control and improved energy efficiency. Humidification was incorporated to support patient comfort, and air distribution systems were designed to meet healthcare pressurization and ventilation requirements. High-efficiency air filtration was provided throughout inpatient care areas to support indoor air quality.

Chilled water and hot water piping were extended from existing campus distribution systems and routed across the roof and interior spaces using insulated copper piping. All mechanical systems were integrated into the facility’s existing direct digital control system, allowing centralized monitoring and control by maintenance staff.

Plumbing design services included replacement of domestic water, sanitary waste, vent piping, medical gas systems, and fire protection sprinkler systems within the renovated wing.

New plumbing fixtures were provided in patient rooms, toilet rooms, and support spaces. Domestic water systems were designed with hot-water recirculation to maintain consistent delivery, and medical gas piping was installed to serve patient headwalls in accordance with healthcare facility requirements. Fire protection systems were modified and coordinated with new mechanical systems and ceiling layouts to maintain full sprinkler coverage throughout the renovated areas.

Electrical engineering services included demolition and replacement of normal, emergency, and critical power systems serving the renovated wing. New electrical panels were provided to support patient care equipment, lighting, and life-safety systems. Interior lighting was upgraded with energy-efficient LED fixtures, including patient room lighting, corridor lighting, and support space illumination. Emergency and exit lighting were provided to meet life-safety requirements.

A new fire alarm system was coordinated with the electrical and mechanical designs, including smoke detection, notification devices, and interface connections to mechanical systems and sprinkler monitoring equipment. The Riverside Hospital Cancer Center renovation improved system performance, patient comfort, patient safety, reliable operation, and long-term facility reliability.
