The project converted unused space in the Test Lab basement
into a mechanical room with two (2) 400 ton variable speed
chillers and associated pumps and equipment to provide a central
chilled water plant. The plant serves the Test Lab, an adjacent
Electronics Building, and fifteen (15) buildings containing
equipment serving the underground accelerator loop. Existing
air-handling equipment in the Test Lab and Electronics Building
were converted from constant flow to variable flow chilled
water. Existing DX air-handling systems serving the 15 accelerator
loop buildings were replaced with glycol chilled water systems.
A flat plat heat exchanger and a two-mile underground glycol
chilled water distribution system served the accelerator loop
buildings.
